I don't know if you've heard, but it was recently announced that the BBC decided to pull the plug on Top Gear after nearly 45 years on the air. Sources say that the show was canned due to Freddie Flintoff's crash last year, after which the BBC put Top Gear on hiatus before its cancellation. Though, I believe it was actually cancelled due to poor ratings, which have been in decline ever since Chris Evans' short-lived stint as presenter in 2016 after Jeremy Clarkson got sacked in 2015 and Richard Hammond and James May subsequently left Top Gear to make The Grand Tour. The BBC has stated that they remain committed to Chris Harris, Paddy McGuinness and Freddie Flintoff, suggesting that they'll probably present other shows on BBC, just not Top Gear. It makes me wonder if the BBC has plans to make a big send-off special to wrap up the show.
If Top Gear really is over, then I believe it had a good run. It's hard to believe that this motoring show was on the air for over 40 years, which I think is more than enough for a car show. And even if the episodes with the new presenters aren't all that amazing, we can always look back fondly at the stuff made during the Clarkson, Hammond and May era of Top Gear, along with The Grand Tour.
Who knows, maybe Top Gear will be revived again in the near future (possibly with a new team of hosts, I'd imagine), though I'm not holding out my breath for it.
