Duel was the name of the fourteenth Clarkson home video release, as part of a series which would be released yearly through to 2011. It was filmed around the same time that Series 14 of Top Gear was being filmed, and came out 13 days before the first episode had aired.
Synopsis[]
Similar to its predecessor, the tone of this DVD was much similar to a Top Gear episode of the era, largely comprised of challenges between 2 or more cars. Examples of these challenges include which car makes the most smoke whilst going sideways, between a Lamborghini Murcielago SuperVeloce or a Vauxhall VXR8 Bathurst S, which is best at drifting; the Jaguar XKR, the Lotus Evora, Audi's R8 V10 or BMW's M3, and can The Stig, who makes another cameo appearance, take on a variety of tasks that challenge his immense driving prowess?
There are also team based challenges with Clarkson and Stig going head-to-head against ex-Top Gear and then-Fifth Gear presenters Tiff Needell and Vicki Butler-Henderson. Once more, cars are destroyed in segments involving catapults, pianos, and explosions, including yet another Morris Marina and yet another Ford Scorpio.
Trivia[]
- This was the second of four Top Gear-related crossover events; Series 11, Episode 6 (with D-Motor), The Top Gear Ashes and Top Gear: Festival Sydney (with Top Gear Australia were the other three.
- This was the last release to come out exclusively on DVD; the final two releases would be released jointly onto DVD and Blu-Ray.
- This was also the final release to feature destruction of undesirable cars; this is perhaps due to the increased rarity of the cars he destroyed, including an extremely rare Talbot Samba Cabriolet, which received quite some backlash at the time.
- Tiff Needell had previously appeared in Clarkson: Head to Head.
- Vicki Butler-Henderson had previously appeared in Clarkson: At Full Throttle.
