Ford Sierra RS Cosworth is a homologation variant of the Ford Sierra built by the Ford Europe from 1986 to 1992. The Sierra RS Cosworth was built to compete the Group A class and as a hot hatch, as well. The car was built with 5,000 units as per regulation by the said class.
The engine comes with exclusively tuned by the in-house by Cosworth, a 2-litre YBD to YBJ and turbocharged with the drivetrain initially as FR layout, this was the last hot hatch to have the said drivetrain. The 1990 MY-models, the drivetrain was shift to AWD. The street version power rated under 200-bhp, but the race version has 300-hp, however.
The special Sierra RS500 Cosworth was built in 1987, the car was limited with 500 units. It features an upgraded engine and the drivetrain with uprated to 227-bhp with the cosmetic/aero upgrades. This was exclusively for UK-markets, the LHD was also produced with lower figures as an import version.
The Sierra RS Cosworth saw the success of the Touring Car Championship.
The saloon version was built as the Sierra Sapphire RS Cosworth with same drivetrain both RWD and AWD, but the gearbox uses the Fergusson over the Borg-Warner. The saloon Sierra RS Cosworth was popular for the rallying in lower class at the hands of amateur drivers.
The Sierra RS Cosworth was discontinued in 1992, and then replaces the smaller as the Ford Escort RS Cosworth.
