The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG was a luxury GT car built by the German automobile manufacturer, Mercedes-Benz from 2010 till 2014. The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG was built by Mercedes-Benz's in-house tuning company, Mercedes-AMG. The SLS AMG is a front-mid engine, rear-wheel drive grand tourer, and it's the first car designed entirely by Mercedes-AMG, and the last Mercedes-Benz car to use a naturally aspirated engine. The SLS AMG was replaced by the less expensive Mercedes-AMG GT.

This car is a successor, both to the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren and the Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing, since it has a similar layout to the SLR McLaren, and features gull-wing doors, like the 300SL. SLS stands for 'Sport Light Super'.

The SLS AMG features a 6.2 liter M159 DOHC V8, and and has-a 7 speed clutch-automatic transmission with a transaxle. The SLS develops 563 horsepower and 650 N·m of torque achieving 0-60 in 3.7 seconds and topping out at 200mph.

Appearances

  • The SLS AMG made its first appearance on TGM (UK) 208 Jeremy drives the SLS concluded it to be his favouritest car ever, due to its gun-slinger performance and loose backend.
  • The SLS was featured in "Halo vs. Velociraptor" (S1 E4) tested by Ferrara who despite praising the sound, gullwing doors and performance, disliked the car's styling, soundtrack and ride comfort. The SLS AMG is then given to The Stig who sets a time of 01:27.6.
  • In Clarkson: The Italian Job despite failing to keep up with a Lamborghini Gallardo Superlegerra, Jeremy praises the SLS' humility stating due to it making him giggle more than any other car featured. He concludes by stating that "A Giggle, more than looks, more than speed, more than anything. That's what matters in a car most of all!"
  • In the East Coast Road Trip, Jeremy chose the SLS as his choice against James in the Ferrari 458 Italia and Richard in the Porsche 911 GT3 RS. Despite feeling it bursting its tyres several times during the trip Jeremy concluded that it was his favouritest car and that its tyre smoking was "The AMG Way". Despite challenging James to a drag race, the SLS drew with the 458.
  • In Series 18, Episode 2, Jeremy reviewed the SLS Roadster, naming the sheer number of faults with the car before concluding that it was "Fantastic" due to its bonkers nature. At the hands of The Stig, the roadster achieved a lap time of 1:19.6 with Jeremy comparing the SLS to Robert Downey Jr. stating "He's never won an Oscar but he's still brilliant!"
  • In Top Gear: The Worst Car in The History of the World James and Jeremy raced the SLS Gullwing in a Ferrari 458 Spider, with the latter, deliberately staying behind the SLS. Eventually the SLS' tyres burst and the 458 is declared victor. James later declares the SLS to be the worst Mercedes, in an attempt to get back at Jeremy. His plan is thwartered as a Morris Marina falls ontop of a Fiat Panda. (This was the programme where Jeremy transitioned from the SLS to the LFA).
  • In Series 20, Episode 4, Jeremy reviews two of the latest SLS'. The Black Series and the Electric Drive. Despite concluding that the Black Series is a better package, Jeremy does believe that the Electric Drive will allow the Speed Machine to Live on. With Stig at the wheel, the Black Series laps in 1:19.0 while the Electric Drive laps in 1:21.7.
  • The SLS Black Series was featured in "American Supercars" (S4 E8) as a reward to Foust who praises it's performance and handling characteristics.
  • In Top Gear: The Perfect Road Trip, Jeremy chooses an SLS Black Series against Richard in a Ferrari F12 Berlinetta for the first half of the journey. Jeremy notes the change in character from the standard SLS to the Black Series, noting that it's now a serious Speed Machine rather than a wayward muscle car, comparing the changes to Eddie Izzard doing Richard III, stating how weird it is for a "pantomime character to become so straight".
