The second episode of James May's Cars of the People aired on the 17th of August, 2014. It was presented by James May, as the second of six Top Gear spinoffs, and was the 171st episode of the show as a whole.

Synopsis[]

"By the second half of the 20th century the word "consumption" already had positive connotations. It denoted economic growth, choice, happiness even. But it was also still also the name of a wasting disease, one in which the sufferer grows smaller and weaker and eventually fades away. In the '50s, '60s and even the early '70s, both definitions could be applied to the Cars of the People."

After a brief introductory sequence, May announces that the theme of the show's second episode would be centred around the push for smaller cars in developing and post-war countries, ranging from the likes of the microcar and three-wheeler, all the way down to the scooter.
