The tenth and final episode of the fourth series of Top Gear aired on the 1st of August, 2004. It was presented by Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, James May and The Stig. Patrick Kielty was the guest star. It was the 39th episode overall.

Synopsis[]

Jeremy starts off the episode by asking as to why people buy 4-door saloons. Nowadays (in the context of 2004), there are so many other options, such as MPVs and SUVs. And yet, people still buy saloons.

Tonight...[]

  • James tries to get a sofa in a Volvo estate...
  • The Hamster goes to see the 'Vette...
  • And [Jeremy] go[es] off road in a BMW that can't.

Airing History[]

Series 4, Episode 10 originally aired on the 1st of August, 2004, on BBC 2. It was then cut into a series of compilations known as "The Best of Top Gear", before indefinitely ending up as a permanent fixture on Dave from the channel's 2007 debut onwards, albeit in a cut 45-minute version. It would later appear on streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime and IPlayer.

Episode Names[]

Though never given a name upon its original airing, much like every other episode of Top Gear, a name was retrospectively applied to the episode by the BBC years later; Top Gear's own website calls it "The one with the Long Jump Challenge".

Trivia[]

  • Jeremy's opening rant could be construed as hinting towards the invention of the crossover, which Nissan would introduce to the world a year later in the form of the Qashqai.
  • When introducing the episode's Star in a Reasonably-Priced Car, Patrick Kielty, Jeremy mentions Kielty appearing on a Sports Relief special where he and other celebrities drove around a race track, which is a reference to the Stars in Fast Cars pilot episode that aired as part of Sports Relief and was hosted by Richard Hammond and James May. The pilot episode featured both Jeremy Clarkson and Patrick Kielty among the celebrities that participated, however, when Stars in Fast Cars was picked up for a series, Hammond and May did not return as hosts.
