Volkswagen Golf R is an AWD high-performance hot hatch variant of the Volkswagen Golf, introduced in 2002 as the Mark IV Golf continues to production throughout to present gen.

Like from the Golf, it retains the 5-door hatchback whereas GTI is 3-door hatchback (also offered in Mark VI R) but also FWD high-performance. A powerful 2-litre engine with a turbocharged inline-4 includes direct-injection under TSI and a flagship AWD uses a Haldex-type. Previously Mark IV and Mark V initially comes a naturally-aspirated VR6 later dropped in Mark VI in-favour of inline-4.

Initial models from Mark IV to Mark V badges as R32 (note it should not be confused from the Nissan Skyline GT-R which is a model code for third-gen), Mark VI simply badged as R now replaced a smaller inline-4 comes a turbocharged and petrol direct-injection, Mark VI has an optional 3-door later dropped in Mark VII. Mark VII Golf R now has 300-hp and last to offered with manual gearbox. A limited R400 never made to production in a wake of the emission scandal in 2015. Mark VII ended in 2019.

Mark VIII Golf R now uses a DSG gearbox for global market while North American market still offers a manual gearbox as an option. Engines now boasted with 315-hp.
